The Most Lopsided Finals in Years!

LeBron James has done a remarkable feat. He's the first player in the modern NBA to make it to five consecutive NBA finals. Of course, he may want to remember 2007, where he went into a very tough finals and got swept. While Cavaliers fans should be excited about contending for a title, they shouldn't be too excited about their chances. It turns out this finals is the third most lopsided in the three-point era!

A good indication of a team's quality is their point differential. Namely, how much they're expected to outscore their opponent on average. When we factor in strength of schedule, we can get a good indication of how good a team is and the gap between them and their opponent. Above are the thirteen finals in the three-point era where the "favorite" team was +3.0 points better than their opponent. The bad news for the Cavs? This is the third most lopsided finals. In fact, many NBA players weren't even born the last time we saw such a David and Goliath matchup. Of course, LeBron James also participated in another such finals in 2007. For those that remember, the Cavs went down in four.

A few other random thoughts I had while putting this data together.

  • The Spurs have been involved in a ton of lopsided finals. Holy cow!
  • The Rockets sure love being the underdog. Sure a 1-2 record isn't great. But given they were wildly outclassed (in theory.) that's pretty good! Of course, the Rockets did make a trade for Clyde, which definitely helped.
  • Gotta feel for the Sonics and Blazers. Both were fantastic teams that just ran into ridiculously good Bulls teams.

The good news is we have history in the making. If the Cavaliers can upset the Warriors, it will be the greatest, arguably, in NBA history. And if the Warriors win? We'll have a title team other than the Lakers from California for the first time in almost four decades.
